R&B的全名是Rhythm&Blues，一般译作“节奏布鲁斯”、“节奏怨曲”。
广义上，R&B可视为“黑人的流行音乐”，它源於黑人的Blues音乐，是现今西行流行来和摇滚来的基础。

随着流行乐的发展R&B越来越多的同Hip-Hop、Rock等流行元素密不可分。John Legend在得到著名Hip-Hop制作人Kanye West一纸合约之前，就已经与包括Lauryn Hill、Jay-Z在内的大牌艺人有过合作，然而真正令John Legend一举成名却是在Kanye West为其制作专辑《Get Lifted》之后，John Legend凭借这张专辑一举夺得最佳R&B专辑、最佳R&B男歌手等三项大奖，2006年John 又凭借《Once Again》再度捧走了最佳R&B男歌手的金唱机。
